It is what gives us the strength to step over the ledge, to take a leap into the unknown despite the possibility that we may fall flat on our faces. Thomas Foster writes about our battle with this saying, “As thrilled as we are by the prospect of flying, we are also frightened at the prospect of falling.” Does our fear of falling outweigh our yearning to be able to spread our wings and fly?
Faith is not about having enough data or knowledge to step out and make a decision. In fact, it seems to be the opposite. When we take a step of faith it is more about having the courage to take a chance despite not having all of the answers. It is the ability to move toward something no matter the consequences, because it could be important in the pursuit of your vision.
Faith is directly tied to belief. Belief in you, others, or something higher altogether guides these decisions, these leaps of faith. Faith is hard. It is not concrete, yet it is necessary to foster growth. It stretches us to believe that more is possible and those steps begin to become more feasible over time. The space between where you are and where you want to be begins to get smaller.
For example, I am beginning an internship at InitiativeOne. I am a little out of my comfort zone. This is going to become a new normal for a while. It is not at all what I am used to. I am stepping out in hopes of finding some things that I am truly passionate for in order to obtain some direction in my life. This is a step of faith for me.
It does not have to be some giant leap, starting small to build some confidence and courage is not a bad thing. However, do not be afraid to take a risk when an opportunity presents itself. Risk helps us to translate our faith into action. It forces a change in perspective. Fear has a lot to do with the way that we interpret the things that happen to and around us. So, have faith. Have faith that the fear you may feel is unnecessary and the leap that you should take will allow you to see things that you did not think were possible. Whether you fall into the bottom of a canyon or soar high above the clouds, it is a change from where you are. Fear will not take you anywhere.
