What is your educational background?
Ph.D. and M.A. in Psychology from Emory University and a B.S in Biology from Rhodes College. My graduate focus was in behavioral neuroscience-- how the brain learns, remembers, and produces behavior.
What is your professional background?
I've been a college professor (CSU, GVSU, Aquinas College) , a corporate OD professional( Motorola and Spectrum Health), HR director (GVSU) , and performance consultant (THINC Consulting). I enjoy helping people discover their personal vision and work towards it. My gift is for gathering information, mixing it with my experience, and sharing it in a way that benefits others.
What are the best books that you have read?
I don't know about "best" but my favorites are: A Prayer for Owen Meany (John Irving), The Kite Runner (Khaled Hosseini) and Building the Bridge as You Walk on It: A Guide for Leading Change (Robert Quinn).
What is your favorite quote?
"Everyone thinks of changing the world but no one thinks of changing himself" (Tolstoy) . I also love "The antidote to exhaustion is not rest, the antidote is wholeheartedness." I read this from both David Whyte and Brene' Brown but the quote comes before them.
What is your hidden talent?
I can put many pennies on my elbow and then catch them with the hand on the same arm. My record is 41 pennies. Over time I've also developed a talent for being a good listener.
What is your family information?
I'm happily married to the best human I know and have three boys in their teenage years ("goofballs"). We have a wonderful time together and being a father has been my greatest and most satisfying role---- I'm actually pretty good at it.
What is your favorite hobby?
Golf and lots of it. I like it because it gets me outdoors and I can always improve at something in the game. I play with my sons and it really binds us together. The two secrets to golf are 1) nobody's really any good and 2) no one cares how you play so long as you don't hold them up and are not a jerk. Remember those two things and you’ll have fun.
Who is your favorite band?
Neil Young and Crazy Horse. I love the soulful guitar.
What is your favorite food?
Having been raised in Memphis TN it is easily BBQ. The Rendezvous, Corky's, Central BBQ, and the Commissary in Germantown are like mother's milk to me. Tomato/vinegar based sauce, cole slaw on the sandwich, and some hush-puppies. Keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle and no one will get hurt.....
What is one item on your bucket list?
Travel to Australia and New Zeeland. The plants and animals took such a different evolutionary track it would be fascinating to see. A close second would be to attend the Masters Golf tournament (see 'hobby")
What is your favorite movie?
While I get a lot of grief from my family, I love "The Princess Bride." No matter where I enter into that movie I get mesmerized and end up watching the rest of it. So many great characters and memorable lines.
